Virgin Hair vs. Remy Hair: What’s the Difference

Hair extensions are insanely popular today, and as you can imagine, there’s an overwhelming number of vendors selling them. If you’re planning a purchase, you must know that there are different types of human hair extensions being sold, and not all are created equal. In this article, we’ll explain the difference between two terms you’re most likely to come across in the world of hair extensions – remy hair and virgin hair.

Let’s get one thing straight ladies: Remy Hair does not always mean Virgin hair, in fact it rarely means that. Although the two terms are used synonymously, they are completely different in meanings.

Remy Hair can be categorized in the premium segment, as far as hair quality is concerned. Remy hair is bundled in such a manner that the roots of the hair are on one side and the tip of the hair on the opposite side. When all hair strands follow the same direction, there will be almost no tangling and matting. High quality “remy” is when it is collected directly from a woman's head and has been cut while in a ponytail, from a single donor.

Virgin Hair is 100% real human hair that has never been altered by a chemical process at the time of collection(no perms, dyes, color, etc.). Virgin hair means that the hair is so pure that it has never been processed or chemically treated, EVER. This hair usually comes from younger women, so there are no grey hairs or split ends. When choosing virgin hair, hair donors must have long, full, healthy hair.

Non-remy Hair is hair that has been collected from the floor of temples, salons and random suppliers. With this type of collection method, cuticle directions become mixed, causing inevitable shedding, tangling and matting problems. To mask the problems that will arise with non-remy hair, hair suppliers normally use harsh chemicals to strip the cuticles completely and then apply a large amount of silicone coating to make the hair appear soft and silky. This solution gives the hair a great appearance and even easy maintenance at first. However, washing the hair several times will eventually remove the silicone coating and expose the hair- causing matting and tangling.

At Indianhair.net, we specialize in 100% virgin Indian remy hair, which comes directly from donors of temples in India. Our hair is ethically sourced, processed very gently and crafted to last.
